Taste of World

A plan by Pfizer Inc to shed its nutrition unit, which includes the major infant formula milk maker Wyeth LLC, could shake up the market for this baby product, industry analysts said.

Last week, Pfizer, the world's largest drugmaker, said it would shed its animal health and nutrition divisions to better position itself as a leading bio-pharmaceutical company.

A RETAILER of expensive furniture yesterday insisted that all the Italian brands it sold had been produced in Italy, despite claims it was manufactured in China.

At an exhibition in Beijing, Doris Phua, CEO of Shanghai-based DaVinci Furniture Ltd, said: "All what CCTV said was not the truth. All the Italian brands we sell are produced in Italy."

Nevertheless, the company may be facing a flood of demands for refunds and compensation as a result of a CCTV investigation which claimed that furniture sold by the company was exported to Italy and then imported so that it could qualify for import certificates.

The export volume of heavy-duty trucks grew from 1,300 units in 2006 to 12,287 units in 2009, with the sales revenue for the trucks climbing from 50 million to $450 million.

Exports of apple juice, another of the province's big earners, accounted for 60 percent of the country's total apple juice exports for the period, and 36 percent of the world's.

Trade: 'Italian' furniture was made in China

My China B2B

A FURNITURE company is being investigated after it was revealed that products said to be imported from Italy were made in China. According to a report by China Central Television, products sold by Shanghai-based DaVinci Furniture Ltd were sent to Italy and then back to China so they could qualify for import certificates.

A customer surnamed Tang said she had bought about 40 pieces of furniture from the company, valued at more than 2.8 million yuan (US$700,000). The company said almost all the furniture was imported from Italy, but she found many problems with the pieces. The furniture gave out a strong chemical smell, and the size of a single bed, which cost 100,000 yuan, was 30 centimeters shorter than advertised.

Tang said the company told her the size difference was because of "the standard difference between China and Italy."

China's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, rose 6.4 percent year-on-year in June, the highest level since June 2008, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Saturday.

Of the 6.4 percent CPI growth in June, 3.7 percentage points were contributed by the carryover effect of price increases last year, the NBS said in a statement on its website.

China Investment may drop in 7 key sectors

My China B2B

CHINA may rein in plans to invest heavily in seven new strategic industries, including high-speed rail and wind power, scaling back cutting-edge projects for industries suffering from old-fashioned problems such as corruption and overcapacity, sources said.

The central government originally planned to invest up to US$1.5 trillion over the next five years in the seven sectors, hoping they would grow into a pillar of economic growth and help shift the world's second largest economy away from one centered on manufacturing cheap goods.

The pullback on spending stems partly from worries about corruption in the country's high-speed rail project and overcapacity concerns in the wind power sector, said two sources with knowledge of the plan.

China's reinforced administration of certain resources products is in line with the objective of the World Trade Organization (WTO),the Chinese Preferment Mission to the WTO said Tuesday.

For the purpose of protecting the environment and exhaustible natural resources, the Chinese government in the recent years has reinforced its administration on certain resource products, especially the "high-pollution, high-energy-consuming and resource-dependent" products, the Chinese Mission said in a statement.

Although these measures have certain impacts on domestic and international users, they are in line with the objective of sustainable development promoted by the WTO according to the statement.

Traditional Chinese Food requires respect!

Posted by Taste of World in Traditional Food , Food , Egg , China

Taste of World

HUBEI Shendan Healthy Food Co, China's largest producer of egg products, has filed an official complaint with CNN that requires the US TV network to apologize for listing pi dan, a traditional Chinese dish, as the "most disgusting food" in the world.

The complaint, filed on Monday on behalf of Liu Huaqiao, chairman of Shendan, as well as its 3,000 employees, was the latest in a series of civilian efforts aimed to defend the popular Chinese dish, which is hundreds of years old. "CNN's report, based on evaluations made by those who are even not consumers of pi dan, was obviously conducted in an unscientific way," Shendan said in a letter. "The conclusion it has come up with only proved its ignorance and arrogance, as well as a complete lack of respect for cultural traditions in other countries."

The dish is made by preserving eggs in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, lime and rice hulls.

CHINA Vanke Co and Evergrande Real Estate Group retained their status as the country's top home sellers - by value and by area respectively - in the first half of this year with both registering more than 80 percent growth from a year ago, despite government measures to rein in the market since January.

Shenzhen-based Vanke retained the No. 1 spot after selling a total of 64.42 billion yuan (US$9.96 billion) worth of new houses between January and June while Guangzhou-based Evergrande continuously topped all other domestic rivals by registering six-month residential sales of 6.2 million square meters, according to the half-year report released by China Real Estate Information Corp and China Real Estate Appraisal yesterday.

The two real estate information service providers tracked sales of new houses in nearly 100 major cities developed by companies whose main operations are on the Chinese mainland. Those built under the country's affordable housing programs, however, were excluded.

Luxury: Tax on luxury 'should be raised'

TAX on imported luxury goods should not be canceled or reduced, an official with China's Ministry of Finance said, adding that it should be raised.

The comments by Liu Shangxi, a senior researcher with the ministry, came just days after Yao Jian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, said key ministries were about to submit a proposal to the State Council asking for the import duty on luxury goods to be cut.

But in an article on the finance ministry's website, Liu cited the need to maintain social equality and protect domestic companies.
