Industry: New anti-dumping duties on photo products

My China B2B

China's Ministry of Commerce imposed five-year anti-dumping duties of 16.2 to 28.8 percent on photographic paper and paperboard from the United States, the European Union and Japan in a final ruling on Thursday.

The move indicated that China is warning its trading partners about the intensifying trade investigations into Chinese goods and challenges to China's export regulations, according to experts.

The anti-dumping investigation was launched in December 2010 in response to complaints by domestic producers, including Lucky Film Co Ltd.

IMPORTS of a popular mouthwash were suspended yesterday after Procter & Gamble announced a worldwide recall of the product, China's quality regulator said.

P&G China has advised consumers to stop using Oral-B Tooth and Gum Care Mouth Rinse with an expiry date between July 15, 2011, and June 30, 2014, because of possible microbial contamination.

The United States company said it had detected excessive microorganisms during an inspection of several batches of products.

Finance: China sees investment from US, Europe drop

My China B2B

Foreign direct investment in China grew at its slowest pace in nearly a year last month with fewer funds coming from the United States and Europe, according to Ministry of Commerce data.

However, a ministry spokesman said yesterday that China remained attractive for foreign investors because of the country's massive market potential and its improving business environment.

Investment from foreign countries edged up 2.83 percent from a year earlier to US$12.8 billion in June, the weakest growth rate since last August. It compared with May's 13.4 percent and April's 15.2 percent.

Finance: US plays with fire by printing money

Posted by My China B2B in Usa , Inflation , Finance , Currency , Crisis

My China B2B

THE recent financial crisis has seen Asia emerge as an economic powerhouse - indeed, as a key driver of global growth.

Indeed, while Asia is rising, the rich industrial countries of the old G-7 have been drifting into a liquidity trap. As the ongoing recession exhausts the traditional instruments of monetary policy, central banks are opting for new rounds of quantitative easing (QE).

And, with investors seeking higher returns, more QE - especially by the US - will drive "hot money" (short-term portfolio flows) into high-yield emerging-market economies, which could inflate dangerous asset bubbles in Asia, Latin America, and elsewhere.

The US Federal Reserve and the Obama administration remain rhetorically wedded to maintaining a "strong dollar." But it is the dollar's weakness that has boosted US corporate earnings since the crisis erupted. Since early 2002, the US dollar has fallen by one-third against major currencies, and recently this decline has intensified.

US chain hopes to tap potential of province's high-quality coffee beans

US coffee chain Starbucks Corporation said it will open its first global coffee bean farm in China's Yunnan province, aiming to deepen its presence in the country, after signing a cooperation agreement with Yunnan government on Friday.

"The Chinese market reflected the most significant growth in coffee sales of our company last year and we chose Yunnan as the first place where we grow coffee as we see a big potential for coffee business here," Howard Schultz, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Starbucks Corporation, told China Daily.

Starbucks didn't reveal the size of its investment in Yunnan.

Apart from the base farm, Starbucks will also establish a coffee development center, coffee farmer support center and coffee processing facilities with the local government.

Fourth rise this year targets liquidity following US quantitative easing

The People's Bank of China on Wednesday said it will raise the required reserve ratio for all lenders by 50 basis points, its fourth increase this year, amid rising liquidity partly caused by quantitative easing in the United States.

The move, which requires lenders to set aside part of their deposits as reserves, will take effect from Nov 16 and is expected to absorb liquidity of about 300 billion yuan ($45.1 billion). Media reports previously said it would target only selected lenders.

"The move is definitely related to the US quantitative easing," said Dong Yuping, senior economist of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).

"It (the US policy) will increase commodity prices and lead to excess liquidity in other parts of the world, especially in the emerging markets, pushing up inflation."

The Federal Reserve launched its latest round of quantitative easing by buying $600 billion in government bonds to prop up the ailing US economy.

Global Demand for steel to slow

Global steel demand growth will decelerate next year as China's real estate market weakens and consumption in Japan falls, the World Steel Association said.

Consumption growth will slow to 5.3 percent in 2011, from a forecast 13.1 percent gain this year, the association said on Monday in a statement released in Tokyo. China and Japan are respectively the world's biggest and second-largest steel producing nations.

Slowing demand in China, where the government has introduced measures to dampen property speculation, led to 40 percent of Chinese mills being made idle or put on maintenance, the China Iron & Steel Association said in August.

US chicken products face stiff Anti-Dumping tariffs

Posted by My China B2B in Usa , Tariffs , China , Chicken , Anti-dumping

My China B2B

CHINA will levy anti-dumping duties of between 50.3-105.4 percent on imports of United States chicken products from today, the Ministry of Commerce said yesterday.

The US chicken industry has dumped broiler products into the Chinese market and caused substantial damage to the domestic industry, the ministry said in an online statement, citing the results of an investigation initiated a year ago.

"The ruling is that there is a causal relationship between the US dumping of broiler products and the losses suffered by domestic businesses," the statement said.

The tariff rate for products China imports from Tyson Foods Inc and Keystone Foods LLC is 50.3 percent and that for Pilgrim's Pride Corporation is 53.4 percent, according to the statement.

Sanderson Farms Inc and 31 other firms face 51.8 percent duty. Other US producers face a 105.4-percent duty.

The anti-dumping measures will be applied to the products for five years, the statement said.

In late August China imposed anti-subsidy duties from 4-30.3 percent on US chicken products for five years.

China consumed almost 800,000 metric tons of US chicken products in 2008, valued at $722 million, according to the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council.

US wineries seek growing Chinese market

Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland are developing a strong thirst for wine, and Washington and Oregon are hoping for a taste of those growing markets.

So far, only a trickle of Northwest wines make it to Asian countries outside of Japan. But experts say as affluence grows in China's booming economy, so will the demand for the finer things in life.
