Fake Furniture: DaVinci scandal now smells of fraud

My China B2B

THERE is no telling how the conflicting forces swirling around the DaVinci furniture scandal are to play out, but the latest twist is already a test of the imagination.

The luxury furniture maker suffered a heavy blow July 10, when CCTV?s Weekly Quality Report program claimed that, after six months of underground investigation, it found that a brand of DaVinci furniture labeled òMade in Italyó was actually manufactured in a factory in Dongguan, Guangdong Province. These products were then shipped to Italy, then imported back to China through a Shanghai port, to acquire necessary paperwork to show importation from Italy.

IN the wake of a big scandal, local authorities will strengthen inspections of imported furniture, giving particular scrutiny to their materials and place of origin.

Officials admitted that the inspection process had flaws, as they usually checked only the products' customs declaration, which gave companies the chance to cheat consumers.

In the DaVinci scandal, the bureau said the Cappalletti furniture, one of Davinci Furniture Co Ltd's products, had some quality problems and had no Chinese label on it, an illegal practice. The bureau ordered DaVinci to stop selling all Cappalletti furniture.

Luxury Furniture: DaVinci faces suits over furniture sales

THREE Shanghai consumers will launch a lawsuit against DaVinci Furniture Co Ltd today, demanding compensation totaling 1.5 million yuan (US$232,920) from the company amid accusations that it lied about where its furniture was made.

Next week things will get worse for DaVinci, as a larger group of consumers plans to file suit for many times that amount. Combined, the lawsuits will be seeking compensation that may add up to more than 40 million yuan, lawyers said.

The Yingke Law Firm Shanghai said the three consumers filing today bought furniture from the company at a total price of 1 million yuan. The company claimed that the furniture was made in Italy or Spain.

Fake Luxury Furniture: Big suit coming vs DaVinci

TWENTY local consumers are expected to file a joint lawsuit against DaVinci Furniture Co Ltd to seek 40 million yuan (US$5.7 million) in compensation, the biggest action taken against the company.

Ten consumers have entrusted the Yingke Law Firm Shanghai to handle the case. They bought products from DaVinci at costs ranging from 800,000 yuan to 4 million yuan, the law firm said yesterday. Another 10 consumers are expected to join them during the next two weeks to launch the suit, which will allege fraudulent overpricing of low-quality products by DaVinci.

"We have talked with the consumers," said Li Renzheng, a lawyer with the law firm. "They said quality problems emerged in one to two years after they bought the furniture, such as paint peeling off."

Fake Luxury: Furniture fiasco hits credibility

THE DaVinci scandal has affected other international furniture brands in the Chinese market, as consumers start to question whether all the high-end brands lie about the places where their products are made.

In fact, some local furniture dealers have withdrawn claims that their products are fully imported, admitting to Shanghai Daily that the furniture was in fact made in China or other developing countries.

In an outlet of Yuexing Homes in Jing'an District, Shanghai Daily found that sales personnel no longer said their products were fully imported. Sales persons for several brands, such as Duke York, Mahogany, and Lucca Magic, all said that their products were produced either on the Chinese mainland or in Indonesia.

The Shanghai-based company said in a statement that it will "accept supervision from the government, media and the public," and has "started self-inspection."

"We are now cooperating with the government to double check the situation and will take on our responsibility according to the law," said the statement.

SHANGHAI'S market watchdog has ordered DaVinci Furniture Ltd to stop selling products bearing the Cappelletti brand because of "fake ads" and "unqualified labels."

The Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau has sealed 188 pieces of Cappelletti furniture in the company's warehouse in the city's Qingpu District.

Officials said DaVinci's ads usually included exaggerated terms such as "supreme" and "top of the world" which were not allowed under Chinese law.

Trade: Furniture boss stands by 'Italy' label

A RETAILER of expensive furniture yesterday insisted that all the Italian brands it sold had been produced in Italy, despite claims it was manufactured in China.

At an exhibition in Beijing, Doris Phua, CEO of Shanghai-based DaVinci Furniture Ltd, said: "All what CCTV said was not the truth. All the Italian brands we sell are produced in Italy."

Nevertheless, the company may be facing a flood of demands for refunds and compensation as a result of a CCTV investigation which claimed that furniture sold by the company was exported to Italy and then imported so that it could qualify for import certificates.

Trade: 'Italian' furniture was made in China

A FURNITURE company is being investigated after it was revealed that products said to be imported from Italy were made in China. According to a report by China Central Television, products sold by Shanghai-based DaVinci Furniture Ltd were sent to Italy and then back to China so they could qualify for import certificates.

A customer surnamed Tang said she had bought about 40 pieces of furniture from the company, valued at more than 2.8 million yuan (US$700,000). The company said almost all the furniture was imported from Italy, but she found many problems with the pieces. The furniture gave out a strong chemical smell, and the size of a single bed, which cost 100,000 yuan, was 30 centimeters shorter than advertised.

Tang said the company told her the size difference was because of "the standard difference between China and Italy."
