The Export-Import Bank of China (China Eximbank), a major policy bank, will formally launch a yuan-denominated sovereign fund before the end of this year to invest in Latin America, a senior executive said on Thursday.

The fund, which amounts to $1 billion, will be mainly put into infrastructure construction in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Liu Liange, vice-president of China Eximbank, told China Daily.

In late March, the two banks signed a letter of intent to establish an infrastructure investment mechanism to finance public and private sector projects across the region, with the yuan as one of the currencies to undertake the investments.

"Investment in the infrastructure sector fits well with the developmental needs of Latin America," said Liu, adding that he expected the investments conducted in yuan could help companies hedge risks brought by currency fluctuations.

Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz will recall some imported S- and ML-Class vehicles in the mainland areas of China, the country's quality supervision watchdog said Monday.

A statement with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said the company started on Monday to recall all S-Class vehicles manufactured from July 8 to 12 of 2010, which have been found of substandard pulley dampers, according to a statement posted on the AQSIQ website.

Defects in the pulley dampers could lead to a loose connection between the internal damper strap and the pulley damper. This causes harm to automotive maintenance workers who might be working on these vehicles, as the loosened components could fall and hurt them, the statement said.

My China B2B

China's economic planning agency on Monday vowed to step up its crackdown on price fraud and manipulation by producers of consumer goods in light of China's stubbornly high inflation rate on Monday.

Local authorities should keep a close watch on the prices of grain, cooking oil, vegetables, eggs and meat as the May Day holiday shopping spree approaches, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said on its website.

Drastic price fluctuations should be reported to relevant departments in a timely fashion, the NDRC said. Local price departments should step up its investigations of monopolies and price hike collusion between consumer goods producers, it added.

The NDRC also urged more transparency in the pricing of commercial housing.

European luxury goods companies may target China as they seek to minimize the impact of the Japanese earthquake on their businesses.

The destruction wrought by the quake is likely to have far-reaching consequences on consumer spending in Japan, which may lead to companies concentrating on the Chinese market, especially in cities such as Shanghai, Hangzhou and Beijing.
